Course Description:
This is a one day Carotid Ultrasound training course on the application of B-scan and duplex, pulsed wave, colour and power Doppler techniques in the investigation of the extracranial and intracranial vasculature. The emphasis will be on ‘hands on’ workshops, which will enable delegates to use the latest ultrasound imaging equipment to practice the investigation protocols.
Wessex Diagnostic and Canon Medical Systems are working in collaboration to provide a comprehensive combination of lectures, demonstrations and workshop sessions. These cover both the basic principles of these techniques and investigating extracranial arteries, intracranial arteries, post endarterectomy imaging.
Each clinical lecture will cover the following topics:
• Normal vasculature and variants
• Examination protocols
• Diagnostic criteria
• Case histories
• Pitfalls in interpretation
The program will include the following topics:
• Basic principles of imaging;
• Haemodynamics and Doppler techniques;
• Investigating protocols and diagnostic criteria for carotid and vertebral arteries
• Investigation of the intracranial arteries using colour duplex and transcranial Doppler (TCD)
• Post endarterectomy imaging;
• B-scan and Doppler artefacts and errors.
Sessions:
Morning session:
• Basic principles: Ultrasound and blood flow
• Extra-cranial vasculature
• Intracranial vasculature: TCD applications
• Practical Workshop I
• Practical Workshop II
Afternoon session:
• Vulnerable plaque
• Vertebral and subclavian arteries
• Doppler Ultrasound: artefacts and errors
• Practical Workshop III
• Practical Workshop IV
Structure:
Theory lectures are encouraged by a practical hands-on workshop facilitated by our top faculty. Models and a range of ultrasound systems are presented, with the possibility to utilize a limb phantom for training in ultrasound monitoring of Endovenous laser ablation procedures.
