Conference Description:
Although great progress has been made in the treatment of the inflammatory bowel diseases, many patients feel that they are not full participants in the decision-making process, others are disengaged and a few refuse therapy. This CME course will review structured, patient-specific approaches to achieve shared decision making. The course will also address approaches towards patients who have trouble accepting their diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Published and online resources and tools aimed at improving shared decision making, patient engagement, treatment adherence, and chronic disease management will be presented. Other topics will include the role of therapeutic drug monitoring, the challenges of IBD care in the community practice, scenarios where therapy can be stopped, an update on drug safety in pregnancy, the recognition of infections in immunosuppressed patients and innovations in the treatment of perianal disease.

As a result of attending this activity, the participants should be able to:
• Engage the patient in shared decision making
• Employ an approach tailored to each patient
• Enlist expertise of appropriate mental health providers
• Identify areas where the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation can assist the practitioner in his/her role as a health provider, teacher, and advocate
