5th Annual UF Health Integrative Medicine Conference and Workshop
OVERVIEW
5th Annual UF Health Integrative Medicine Conference and Workshop is organized by University of Florida and will be held during Apr 20 - 21 at Harrell Medical Education Building, Gainesville, Florida, United States of America.
The target audience for this medical event is Primary Care Physicians, Specialty Physicians, physical therapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, athletic trainers, exercise therapists, yoga teachers, and meditation teachers. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
As part of our program’s commitment to promote health and wellbeing, we are focusing our fifth annual conference on integrative pain management. “Flow: “Mind, Movement and Energy” offer both content and practical application of recent information in the field of mindfulness and movement-based therapies. It provides an excellent opportunity for the healthcare professional and interested public audience to understand the relationship of the mind and the body and how it can be utilized as an effective non-pharmacologic adjunct to pain management.
The conference will equip physicians and other healthcare professionals with knowledge, skills and resources needed to use these therapies to decrease improper utilization prescription drugs, particularly opioids, for pain management.
Our intended audience is primary care and specialty care physicians, rehabilitation professionals, nurses, nurse practitioners, athletic trainers, manual and massage therapists, meditation and yoga instructors and acupuncturists.
Local and national experts will be speaking at this conference. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Peter Dorsher, MD, faculty at Mayo Clinic, in Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Dorsher has primary research interests in the application of ancient healing traditions, including acupuncture to modern health care … through understanding their physiologic mechanisms. Dr. Dorsher’s research aims to translate 5000 years of clinical knowledge into contemporary terminology to allow endogenous treatment of pain, physical disorders and psychological disorders.
Learning Objectives :
Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
• Incorporate new techniques for soft tissue release, movement or mindfulness-based interventions in their practice
• Inform patients on non-pharmacologic and non-interventional therapies to treat chronic complex pain.
• List at least three movement and mindfulness-based therapies that can be safely recommended for persons with chronic pain

Fascial Foundations: Intro to the Low Back

We are increasingly gaining more understanding of pain as a biopsychosocial construct. However, pain mechanisms are still being elucidated and debated by researchers. Clinicians continue to follow diagnostic algorithms to identify pain generators using imaging or inflammatory markers. Several pain generators have been identified, including local tissues damage, referral patterns generated by tissue changes, abnormal nervous system discharges, or dysfunctional central nervous system modulation. Exploring the contribution of abnormal body alignment to these pain generators provides us with another avenue to alleviate chronic pain. Fascia, a ubiquitous connective tissue found in the human body is now emerging as an interesting pain generator and fascially oriented manual therapy is being physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractic and athletic training protocols as a way to improve alignment and soft tissue mobility to enhance movement, performance or reduce pain. This workshop aims to enhance the understanding of fascia as a pain generator and the development of skills for management of chronic pain.
This workshop is appropriate for conference attendees, medical practitioners, educators and the general public.
