• Understand the strengths and weaknesses of different study designs in observational research
• Understand the principles that underlie randomise controlled trial and realise how they can be subverted by poor design and execution
• Lose any fear of the critical appraisal sections of examinations and interviews
• Gain confidence when speaking at journal clubs
• Be able to contribute to design and development when planning research projects
