Course Description:
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects more than 1.5 million Americans annually; however, because no two injuries are alike, clinicians, patients, and their families face different and unique challenges based on the type and extent of an injury. Brain injuries, whether traumatic (TBI) or acquired, can range from mild to severe and can interfere with the way a person thinks, behaves and functions, leaving the individual unable to perform basic tasks and affecting memory, concentration, communication, speech, swallowing and vision, as well as mobility. This one-day program will provide participants with updated information on issues associated with plotting the trajectories of TBI and spine trauma patient recoveries. Content will also examine stabilization and missed injuries in acute trauma, rehabilitation and management of complications in spinal cord injury as well as coping and cognition in trauma. In addition to formal presentations and Q&A, a case studies format will be used to evaluate trauma rehabilitation in both spinal cord injury and brain injury.
Course Objectives:
• Improve diagnostic and stabilization techniques for patients with acute trauma to ensure timely diagnosis and avoid missed injuries
• Discuss the rehabilitation needs of individuals with spinal cord injuries and the importance of managing complications
• Integrate advances and techniques in stabilization, management and rehabilitation of individuals with traumatic brain injury
• Recognize the effect of traumatically induced disruption of brain function on the endocrine system and the implications for TBI patient long-term recovery
• Join the “Stop the Bleed” campaign and encourage others to learn what to do when confronted with a life-threatening bleeding situation
• Evaluate the neuropsychological aspects of coping and cognition in patients following TBI
