OVERVIEW
Basic Neuroscience of Movement Disorders is organized by International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) and will be held from Sep 14 - 15, 2018 at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. The target audience for this medical event is intended for neurologists, geriatricians, and basic scientists interested in movement disorders.
Course Description:
The overall aim of this course is to teach young research-oriented neurologists and neuroscientists about fundamental mechanisms underlying movement disorders. The course participants will learn about clinical and genetic characteristics, preclinical models and pathophysiological foundations of movement disorders and their therapies.
An important goal is to update clinical neurologists and neuroscientists on the forefront and the latest developments in research of movement disorders. The course will hopefully engage young neurologists and neuroscientists into research on movement disorders and to promote translational research involving multidisciplinary approaches.
The course mainly consists of lectures by international experts on Parkinson's disease and movement disorders. Local experts will serve as chairs to facilitate discussion after each lecture. They will also organize questioning from the participants and ensure that the time schedule is followed properly. There will also be panel discussions with experts. During breaks and the course dinner, the participants will also get the opportunity to interact with faculty and peers.
Course Objectives:
• Recognize recent basic science developments in genetics and imaging in Parkinson’s disease and their clinical implications
• Review recent basic science developments using cellular and animal models of parkinsonism and their potential to translate into the clinical situation
• Summarize recent basic science developments in dystonia, Huntington’s disease, and ataxias
• Analyze interactions between basic neuroscientists and movement disorders specialists
• Compare novel approaches aimed at treating movement disorders
• Identify important clinical aspects of movement disorders where more basic research is needed
