The course is designed to provide you with a mix of interactive lectures, case discussions, and hands-on practical experience and is based at the Department of Anatomy at Queen’s University, Belfast, using fresh, frozen cadaveric material in our world-class teaching facility. The aim of the course is to build on and develop the basic principles of spinal surgery that you will have learned during your training and provide you with challenging cases, new practical skills and an interesting and thought-provoking look at core knowledge. The course consists of one-day lectures and discussions and one-day practical exercises.

Learning objectives :

• Select the most appropriate surgical procedure and timing for each patient based on the best available evidence
• Apply sound biological and biomechanical principles to each procedure
• Use measures to avoid preventable complications
• Recognize and manage intraoperative complications
• Identify and treat postoperative complications
• Critically analyze the benefits and risks of each operative and nonoperative intervention
• Select operative and nonoperative interventions based on the best available evidence and on the natural history
