Care of the Hospitalized Child

This is a 3-day, innovative CME course for physicians and allied health professionals who are actively engaged in the care of acutely ill, hospitalized children. The course combines opportunities for small group, hands-on and simulation experiences, culminating in a lecture-based symposium on day 3. Flexible enrollment opportunities are offered.

Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinical practice in pediatric hospital medicine. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills and strategies to:
- Implement a plan of care and apply key clinical advances in the field of pediatric hospital medicine such as advances for the care of the child with febrile illness, functional abdominal pain, seizures, and non-accidental trauma.
- Interpret signs and symptoms of clinical deterioration such as status asthmaticus/epilepticus, and develop team-based management strategies to stabilize the child during these urgent clinical situations utilizing simulations.
- Manage acute and chronic pain in the hospitalized child.
- Improve key procedural skills during the care of the hospitalized child such as umbilical line placement, sedation, and intraosseous access.
- Examine the role of everyday communication in the hospital setting, practice strategies to improve performance with difficult situations during family centered rounds, and acquire and apply basic knowledge in QI methodology.
