OVERVIEW

Where does Wilderness Medicine end and Travel Medicine begin? We are going to explore that interface this summer at a historic joint conference of the Wilderness Medical Society and the International Society of Travel Medicine in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, August 1-6, 2014.

The conference will feature the world’s leading experts in wilderness and travel medicine, with cutting-edge topics including malaria eradication, altitude illness in the non-mountaineering population, international disaster relief from the head of disaster relief for the U.S. government, the first new intervention for frostbite in 3 decades, comprehensive overviews of yellow fever, dengue fever, fever in the returning traveler, and a re-evaluation of our current approach to treating travelers’ diarrhea. Workshops will have a track for those new to travel medicine, including the pre-travel visit, immunizations, and malaria prophylaxis and treatment.

Unique this year is the ISTM Certificate in Travel Health examination, which is only offered once a year, and has not been offered in the U.S. since 2011. This is widely recognized as the main credential for demonstrating competence in travel medicine and will be offered in conjunction with this conference.

Keynote speakers include world-renowned Kit Deslauriers (the first person to ski the seven summits), and Jimmy Chin (one of the foremost adventure photographers in the world). The banquet talk will be given by David R Shlim MD, the president of the ISTM, whose life has been lived at the intersection of wilderness and travel medicine.

Pre-conferences include the Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM), Swiftwater Rescue, and a Wilderness EMS Director Workshop. And you will have an option to climb the Grand Teton through legendary EXUM Mountain Guides.

Jackson Hole is a world-class summer destination for the whole family, featuring mountaineering, hiking, wildlife viewing, rafting, kayaking, road and mountain biking against spectacular scenery. Please be sure to book early, as the conference is likely to sell out. We look forward to seeing you next summer!
