Conference Description : BSS is widely viewed as a cornerstone course for all trainees taking up their first surgical position. Over two highly practical days, you will learn a range of essential basic surgical skills and techniques within a controlled workshop environment. You will participate in a variety of practical training sessions during the BSS course, including: • Gowning, gloving, laying safe surgical knots and local anaesthetic management • Tissue handling practice (including for infected and contaminated tissues), along with the requirements for differing tissue sites, such as skin, bowel or vessels • Electrosurgery device usage • Manipulation of endoscopic instruments in a 3D surgical environment while viewing a remote 2D image • Visuospatial awareness, management of depth cueing and control of the ‘fulcrum effect’ during endoscopic surgery Learning Outcomes : • Demonstrate safe operating techniques • Use a variety of surgical knots safely and effectively • Confidently handle and use surgical instruments • Handle tissues confidently with due regard to their unique properties • Use endoscopic instruments in a practical and safe way • Discuss the practical, safe use of electrosurgery Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.

The target audience for this medical event is CT1-2 and ST3. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 18.00 CPD Points. Course Description : This three-day course allows surgical trainees who have completed basic surgical training to expand their skillset. You will take part in a wide range of practical sessions to learn more advanced surgical techniques, focusing on the essential skills needed in emergency circumstances. This course is mapped to the ISCP syllabus for General Surgery ST3/ST4 intermediate stage. You will cover a variety of topics during this course, including : • Review of knot tying • Abdominal closure and principles of suturing • Bowel anastomosis, including size discrepancies, open access and use of clamps • Moderately difficult access - anterior/submucosal • Formation of stomas - double barrelled and end • Side to side and transverse anastomosis using stapling • Vascular – instruments review, mobilisation and control, plus control of bleeds (permanent and until help arrives) • Assessment: bowel anastomosis • Principles and safe use of energy sources • Laparoscopic: appendix simulations skills practice • How to manage an ulcer perforation Course Objectives are : • Demonstrate sound practice in bowel anastomosis in a variety of techniques • Carry out a difficult access sutured anastomosis, to include anterior and submucosal • Form a variety of viable stomas, taking into consideration incision and possible complications • Carry out side-to-side and transverse stapling anastomosis • Carry out emergency arterial closure and vein patching • Carry out a hand-sewn end-to-end anastomosis • Discuss the use of energy sources and demonstrate their safe use • Carry out a laparoscopic appendectomy with due regard to surrounding tissue • Practice the repair of a femoral hernia on porcine model Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
