Adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory failure and septic shock is organized by Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) and will be held from Oct 07 - 10, 2019 at Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, Stockholm, Sweden. Description: This ELSO course is intended for physicians (intensivists, surgeons etc), nurses, perfusionists and other health care professionals, who either work in an ECMO program or who are in the process of starting one.The course will be conducted by the faculty of the ECMO Center at Karolinska. It will include simulations of ecmo patients, practical training in managing the ECMO circuit with change of different components etc, computer simulations of physiology and didactic lectures. Simulations and practical training will be performed in small groups of 6 participants together with one or two instructors. The lectures will cover subjects like components of the ECMO circuit, indications for ECMO, contraindications, managing the patient on ECMO, cannulation strategy, physiology, anticoagulation, troubleshooting etc. General objectives: After having completed the course, the participants should have increased both their theoretical knowledge and their practical skills in managing adult patients on ECMO for respiratory failure and septic shock. Simulation session: Team training is essential in the simulation session. The participants will be trained in team communication. They will realize that in an ECMO circuit emergency situation, some members must focus on resuscitation of the patient and some on managing the problem with the ECMO circuit. Scenarios involving ECMO circuit failure will be simulated and the learners will be trained in problem identification as well as patient management and problem solution. Simulation is conducted in groups of 6 participants with two or three instructors. Wet lab training session: During the wet lab session each participant should gain practical knowledge of assembling the ECMO circuit, priming the circuit, changing oxygenator and changing pump head. 6 participants are trained by two instructors. Didactic lectures: The objective of the lectures is to provide knowledge to the learners regarding the subject of the respective lecture. There are 12 learners during each lecture. The learners are instructed to interrupt the lecturer and ask questions when needed. Short discussions during the lectures are encouraged. The “Patient cases” part involves presentation of patient cases. The cases are presented by two instructors part by part and the learners are encouraged to discuss different possibilities to manage the respective problems or complications. This part of the course is very interactive and the objective is to stimulate the learners to use the knowledge they have gained during the course in a clinical situation.

Ataxia and Related Disorders Course is organized by International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) and will be held from Oct 19 - 20, 2019 at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Recommended Audience: This course is intended for residents and fellows involved in adult and pediatric neurology. It is also aimed at basic researchers who are working on cerebellar degeneration and genetics. Course Description: This broad and comprehensive clinical course aims to provide an update on ataxias and related disorders. With an emphasis on the genetic forms of ataxia and related disorders, we aim to provide an update on the acquired forms of these conditions. This course will be led by faculty who are leading experts in the field and are involved in the search for biomarkers and disease modifying therapies. This is the first course to focus on ataxia organized by the MDS-European Section. Learning Objectives: • Examine the underlying etiology of ataxia and related disorders; • Analyze evidence based care for patients with different types of ataxia and paraparesis and identify treatable conditions; • Differentiate between the most common neurodegenerative ataxia disorders associated with nucleotide expansions; • Understand the association between impaired DNA repair and neurodegeneration • Gain insights on the current search for biomarkers and disease modifying therapies Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
