Inti Zlobec is Associate Professor at the Institute of Pathology, University of Bern. Her research group takes an interdisciplinary and translational approach to study human colorectal cancer. The focus is on three different aspects: biomarkers of disease outcome and therapy response, the molecular pathogenesis of colorectal cancers, and the metastatic dissemination of disease including the investigation of ‘tumor budding’. In addition to strong clinical partnerships, the groups collaborates with experts in molecular methods, bioinformatics, in vitro cell cultures and in vivo models of disease.

Dr. Zlobec has established the Translational Research Unit (TRU) at the Institute of Pathology, a platform that coordinates and supports research conducted by medical and biological scientists, collaborators and clinical partners. The TRU has several aims: 1) to facilitate and promote translational research, 2) to coordinate and support research activities and clinical studies, 3) to promote interaction with basic science and 4) to train medical students in laboratory techniques, digital pathology, histopathology and biostatistics. The TRU specializes in histology, automated immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, digital pathology and selected molecular methods. It has also founded the next-generation Tissue Micro Array (www.ngtma.com) approach to optimize biomarker studies using tissue microarray technology (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25285857). The TRU, with its expertise in these areas, hopes to expand its technical and scientific contributions by supporting the COMPATH platform.
