Dr. Zachary D. Blount is an evolutionary biologist and microbiologist who specializes in the use of microbial evolution experiments. Zachary is interested in a number of basic evolutionary questions, including the importance of historical contingency in evolution, the origins of evolutionary novelty, and speciation. Blount's current research is aimed at studying incipient speciation in an experimental, long-term population of E. coli following the evolution of a key metabolic innovation. Zachary is also interested in public outreach and education about evolution. Blount's current career goal is to secure a faculty position in which Zachary can oversee a robust program of research and teaching. Blount's overall goals are to contribute to a fuller, experimentally grounded, and conceptually coherent understanding of evolutionary contingency and historicity, and to help improve scientific research through better coordination between scientists and philosophers.
