Yvo Smulders studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam and was trained to be an internist at the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis and the Academic Medical Center, where he specialized in the Nefrology area. After his transition to the VUmc in 2001, he was involved in patient care in the fields of general internal medicine, vascular medicine and acute internal medicine, as well as research in the field of vascular diseases. In 2006 he was appointed professor of General Internal Medicine. Since November 2013, Smulders has taken over the head of Kramer.
