Dr. Fan is an Assistant Professor of Neurology specializing in diagnosis and management of epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology including electroencephalography (EEG) and evoked potentials. He is currently board-certified in both neurology and epilepsy. Dr. Fan’s clinical interests include optimizing care for patients with primary or secondary seizures, refractory epilepsy, invasive intracranial recording for localizing epileptogenic foci, and continuous video-electroencephalography (cvEEG) monitoring and quantitative analysis in critical care setting. His clinical research interests include exploring novel methods for early seizure prediction and detection, as well as studying mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis and drug-resistance.

Dr. Fan’s basic research background has been primarily in activity-dependent synaptic plasticity, excitotoxic neuronal injuries, dendritic channelopathy, and their implication in neurological conditions such as stroke and epilepsy, utilizing a number of experimental electroneurophysiological techniques, such as in vivo intracellular and extracellular recording, in vitro patch-clamp recording in brain slice preparation, and developing animal models for neurological conditions such as 4-vessel occlusion method for transient global ischemia after cardiac arrest, stereotactic intrastriatal 6-hydroxydopamine model of Parkinson’s disease, and systemic pilocarpine model for seizures.
