Dr. Yoshihisa Yamashita is a Chairman at Section of Preventive and Public Health Dentistry, Division of Oral Health Growth and Development, Kyushu University Faculty of Dental Science. He received his DDS 1982 and PhD 1986 in Dentistry from Kyushu Dental College. The theme of his thesis is alkaline phosphatase in mammals. He worked on the project of cariogenic bacteria with Prof Tadamichi Takehara in the Department of Preventive Dentistry Kyushu Dental College from 1987 to 1993.

During this period he had postdoc experience in the Howard Kuramitsu laboratory at Texas University Health Science Center at San Antonio for two years and learned genetic recombination techniques. In 1993 he took the position of Associate Professor at Kyushu University and in 2000 he became a Chairman of the Department of Oral Health Science at Nihon University. Finally, in 2003 he moved to Kyushu University and took the present position. Now he is interested in the relationship between oral health status and general health and is progressing research projects involving both benchwork of molecular biology and epidemiology.
