Yoichi Matsubara, MD is currently Director of Research Institute at National Center for Child Health and Development (Tokyo) and Professor Emeritus of Tohoku University School of Medicine (Sendai, Japan). Matsubara graduated from Tohoku University School of Medicine in 1979 with a MD degree. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Kanagawa Children's Medical Center and at Tohoku University Hospital. He received postdoctoral training at New York State Institute of Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities and Department of Human Genetics at Yale University.

Matsubara served as professor of medical genetics at Tohoku University from 2000 to 2013. He also served as President of International Federation of Human Genetics Societies (2008-2012). Currently he is President of the Japan Society of Human Genetics (2015-).
