Dr. Sun received his M.D. (1982) degree from Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang, P.R. China, his M.S. (1986) degree from Zhejiang Medical University, Hangzhou, P.R. China, and his Ph.D. (1989) degree from the University of Iowa. He continued his training as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. through 1990, then moved on to complete a fellowship in cancer biology at the National Cancer Institute, Frederick, Maryland in 1992. He held various positions at the National Cancer Institute, Parke-Davis, and Pfizer Global Research & Development from 1992-2003. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as an associate professor in 2003 and was promoted to professor in 2008.

Dr. Sun’s research focused on the validation of SAG (Sensitive to Apoptosis Gene)-Cullin-RING ubiquitin ligase (CRL) as a promising cancer target for anti-cancer drug discovery. His laboratory utilized state-of-the-art technologies, such as transgenic and KO/KI mouse models, siRNA library screening, and small molecule library screening. Dr. Sun authored more than 200 publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals and published 11 book chapters. His work supported pioneering technologies and continued improvements in clinical outcomes for patients with lung tumors. Dr. Sun was a valued educator throughout his career and frequently invited speaker while remaining active with local, national, and international committees and service
