Xuchen Zhang MD, PhD

Xuchen Zhang, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Pathology with a subspecialty in GI/Liver pathology in the Department of Pathology at Yale School of Medicine. After completing medical school and pathology training, and earning a PhD in Pathology in China, Dr. Zhang pursued pathology residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, followed by a liver/GI pathology fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He has been a faculty member at Yale’s Department of Pathology since 2012, where he currently serves as Director of the GI/Liver Pathology Service.

Dr. Zhang’s clinical and research interests focus on liver/GI pathology, particularly neoplastic and non-neoplastic liver diseases, pancreatic neoplasms, colorectal cancer, and drug-induced liver and GI injuries. As a co-investigator, he has participated in research projects supported by the NIH and other extramural funding sources.

Dr. Zhang has published over 240 scientific and review papers, along with books and book chapters, including serving as editor of Practical Liver Pathology. He also contributed to the 6th edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours: Digestive System Tumours.

Dr. Zhang has been course faculty at the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), the European Congress of Pathology (ECP), and the International Academy of Pathology (IAP). Additionally, Dr. Zhang currently serves as Chair of the Education Committee for the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society (HPHS) and the Connecticut Society of Pathologists (CSP).
