Xiaowei Zhuang MD

Xiaowei Zhuang is the David B. Arnold Professor of Science at Harvard University, and an investigator of Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She is a biophysicist recognized for her work in the development and application of advanced optical imaging techniques, in particular, single-molecule and super-resolution imaging methods, for the studies of biological systems. Born in Jiangsu, China, in 1972, Zhuang became a U.S. citizen in 2009 and received her B.S. degree in Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China, Ph.D. Degree in physics from the University of California at Berkeley, and postdoctoral training in biophysics at Stanford University.

Zhuang after being an assistant professor at Harvard University starting in 2001, she was promoted to associate professor in 2005 and a full professor in 2006. In 2005, Zhuang joined the Howard Hughes Medical Institute as an investigator. Among her awards are the MacArthur Fellowship, the Pure Chemistry Award, the Max Delbrück Prize in Biological Physics, the Raymond and Beverly Sackler International Prize in Biophysics, and the National Academy of Sciences Award in Molecular Biology.
