Dr. Oertel obtained his MD at the University of Berlin, Germany. He completed his postgraduate neuroscience training at the Laboratory of Clinical Sciences at the National Institute of Mental Health, NIH, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. He is full professor for neurology and director of the Department of Neurology at the Philipps University Marburg, Germany, a Centre of Excellence of the US National Parkinson Foundation. Wolfgang H. Oertel is currently speaker of the Competence Network on Parkinson’s Disease (an outstanding infrastructure for medical research in Germany) and chairman of the German Parkinson Study Group.
He is president-elect of the German Society of Neurology and liaison professor of the German National Academic Foundation at the Philipps-University of Marburg. He received the Parkinson-Frosst Award (1986) and the Dingebaur-Price for Parkinson research (2004) from the German Society of Neurology and the “carrier award for basal ganglia disorders” from the German Research Foundation
