
Wilmar M. Wiersinga MD, PhD

Biography :
Dr. Wiersinga is Emeritus Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology, he defended his PhD thesis on "The peripheral conversion of T4 into T3 and rT3" (cumlaude). He worked as a reseach fellow with professors Chopra and Solomon at UCLA. He chaired the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam between 1995 and 2008. He has been past president of the Dutch Endocrine Society and of the European Thyroid Association, and was member of the Executive Committee of the European Federation of Endocrine Societies. He organized several international thyroid symposia in Amsterdam, as well as the EFES congress in 1994 and the ETA annual meeting in 1996 both in Amsterdam. He founded the European Group on Graves' Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) in 1999. He served as member or chair of several Program Organizing Committees of large international endocrine meetings, lastly the International Thyroid Congress in Paris in 2010. He has been the continental editor of Clinical Endocrinology, and currently serves as member of the Editorial Board of JCEM and Editor-in-Chief of the European Thyroid Journal. His research is mainly on the thyroid. He has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and under his supervision 32 PhD students prepared their doctoral thesis. He is honorary member of the German Endocrine Society and the European Society of Endocrinology.
