Dr. Willis C. Maddrey, MD, is a distinguished American physician and hepatologist, currently serving as Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Widely recognized as a leading authority in liver disease, he has made significant contributions to clinical medicine, research, and medical education over a career spanning several decades.

Dr. Maddrey earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency and chief residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He further specialized in hepatology through a fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine.

Early in his career, Dr. Maddrey directed the liver unit at Johns Hopkins, where he also served as Professor of Medicine. He later became Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College. In 1990, he joined UT Southwestern, where he held major leadership roles, including Executive Vice President for Clinical Affairs and Special Assistant to the President, helping to shape the institution’s clinical enterprise.

Dr. Maddrey’s research has focused on chronic viral hepatitis, alcohol-related and drug-induced liver disease, liver transplantation, and primary biliary diseases. He has authored numerous scientific publications and edited several landmark textbooks, including Transplantation of the Liver and Schiff’s Diseases of the Liver, which are considered foundational works in hepatology.

A respected leader in medicine, Dr. Maddrey served as President of both the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American College of Physicians. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including distinguished educator and service awards from major professional societies.
