Dr Farquhar-Smith has been working at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust since 2013 as a Pain Medicine and Anaesthetic Consultant. He has a wide anaesthetic portfolio but has incomparable experience in reconstructive and plastic surgery. He is now Lead for Pain Medicine delivering the highest quality care for inpatient and outpatient pain services. He was integral to the development of the Pain Database, shortlisted for 2 Lang Buisson Awards and for the NHS Digital prize for Innovation.

He has a special interest in Pain in Cancer Survivors including Persistent Post Surgical Pain and Chemotherapy Induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and runs the only dedicated CIPN clinic in the country. He is a dynamic educator and is a Module Lead for UCL MSc Pain Course, was Editor of the Cancer Pain section of the BPS ePain project, and speaks nationally and internationally. Paul has also advised on policy and guidelines such as NICE, ICD-11, London Cancer Vanguard, and Chair of the British Pain Society/Association for Palliative Medicine Committee on pain.

He is on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Pain and Editor of Cancer Pain in Current Opinion in Supportive and Palliative Care journal and is a Cochrane reviewer. He is also currently section Head for Chronic Pain for the acclaimed f1000 educational website. He has an active research portfolio including studies into biomarkers for CIPN and has published over 80 peer-reviewed original articles, chapters and letters on pain, intensive care and anaesthesia.
