William Whittier, MD, FASN, began practicing Nephrology in 2003. He went to Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine for a combined BS/MD program and graduated in 1998, when he moved on to do a Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.

He is a Professor of Medicine at the Rush Medical College the Medical Director for the home Hemodialysis program at Circle Medical Management in Chicago, IL, and the Medical Director for NxStage Kidney Care in Oakbrook, IL, which specializes in home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. He has been involved in trials evaluating vascular access, as well as the use of more frequent hemodialysis, and has done several media events to celebrate its benefits.

His main research area involves the adequacy and safety of renal biopsy, where he has performed several studies and published articles and editorials. Other research interests and publications are in the realms of lupus nephritis, glomerulonephritis, and diabetic nephropathy. He has also published in the realm of acid-base as well as electrolyte abnormalities such as hyponatremia.

He is avidly involved in teaching, not only to medical students, residents, and renal fellows, but also nurses, physician assistants, and dietitians, and teaches routinely in grand rounds and in a nationwide board review course plus continuing medical education courses for Internal Medicine and Nephrology physician specialties. His teaching is exemplary and he has received several teaching awards from students and colleagues in various subspecialties.
