William Freeman MD, FACC, FASE

Dr. William K. Freeman, MD, FACC, FASE, is a distinguished cardiologist, echocardiographer, and internist at Mayo Clinic in pain, echocardiography, valvular heart disease, structural heart disease, and multimodality cardiovascular imaging. In addition to his clinical practice, he has devoted decades to advancing cardiovascular education and has been a leader in training medical students, residents, and cardiology fellows.

Dr. Freeman earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (summa cum laude) from the College of St. Thomas and his Doctor of Medicine from Mayo Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases, and is also certified in Adult Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography.

Throughout his career, Dr. Freeman has combined excellence in patient care with a longstanding commitment to medical education. He has served as Director of the Internal Medicine/Cardiovascular Education Program, Director of the Circulation Block at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, and has been an active member of the Admissions Committee, Executive Admissions Committee, and Curriculum Committee. His research and clinical interests focus on echocardiographic assessment of valvular heart disease, structural heart interventions, and innovative applications of cardiovascular ultrasound. He has authored and edited numerous peer-reviewed publications and textbooks that have contributed significantly to the field of cardiovascular imaging.

Dr. Freeman is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE). His outstanding dedication to teaching has been recognized with multiple honors, including the Teacher of the Year award from the Mayo Fellows Association and the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program Outstanding Teacher of the Year award on several occasions. He has also received the 2024 Distinguished Service Award from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in recognition of his exceptional contributions to cardiovascular education, mentorship, and academic leadership.
