William J. Hanney is an associate professor of physical therapy at the University of Central Florida. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of West Florida for studies in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training and went on to complete his Master and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. He completed his PhD at Nova Southeastern University where he studied predictive variables for patients with neck pain likely to benefit from exercise. In addition to a licensed physical therapist, Hanney is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

His research seeks to investigate the implications of physical therapy treatment for those that suffer from neck and back pain. He has over 75 peer reviewed manuscripts in journals such as the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Physical Therapy, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. In addition, he speaks nationally and internationally on topics related to rehabilitation and sport medicine. He is the 2019 NSCA Sports Medicine Professional of the Year and the Florida Physical Therapy Association recognized his research contributions with the Award for Scholarly Impact on Practice.
