Dr. Cirocco began his career in academia in New York City at SUNY- Downstate involved in preoperative staging of rectal cancer before neoadjuvant Rx to downstage rectal cancer, improving survival, local recurrence, and limiting permanent stomas. He brought this innovation to the Midwest in a private practice setting in Kansas City but returned to academia as Professor of Surgery and Program Director of the ACGME-accredited Colon & Rectal Surgery Residency at OSU. He has >100 contributions to peer-reviewed medical journals. Recent studies include outcomes of preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for the treatment of rectal cancer with observed downstaging of rectal cancer resulting in improved survival, decreased local recurrence, and need for a permanent stoma, "Rectal resection following neoadjuvant therapy by a high volume surgeon in a low volume Midwest community hospital setting: Standardization over centralization as the means to optimize rectal cancer outcomes" was a poster at the ASCRS Convention in May 2015. A companion study of outcomes in an elderly patient population, a podium presentation at the combined 2017 Central/Midwest Surgical Association meeting, later published in the March 2018 issue of The American Journal of Surgery.

Dr. Cirocco has been an Associate Editor of DCR, DCR Selected Abstracts section editor from 2007-2015, and the 1st recipient of the ASCRS' Victor W. Fazio Award for Editorial Excellence in 2007. He was chair of the ASCRS' Young Surgeons Committee from 1998-2003. He is a member of the ASCRS' Self Examination Committee working on CARSEP X. He is also a Member-at-Large of the Executive Council of the ASCRS. He chaired the ACS' Committee on Young Surgeons from 2002-03. He is also the current President of the Midwest Surgical Association and Secretary/Treasurer of the Ohio Valley Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr . Cirocco is a Senior Examiner for the ABCRS and Associate Member of the ABCRS' Written Examination Committee.
