Joost Wiersinga, MD, PhD, MBA, received his medical training at the University of Amsterdam with additional courses at the Mayo Clinic and the National Institutes of Health. At the moment, he divides his time between patient care at the Department of Medicine, teaching and research at the Center for Experimental Molecular Medicine, all at the Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam.
He investigates host-pathogen interaction in severe bacterial infections, with a special interest in sepsis, pneumonia, typhoid fever, melioidosis and the gut microbiota. He participates in clinical guidelines on pneumonia and sepsis and coordinates the H2020 EU funded European Sepsis Academy.
