Wesley Talcott, MD, MBA, joined Northwell Health in 2022 as a radiation oncologist, following a chief residency at Yale University School of Medicine. Talcott was always drawn to medicine, particularly radiation oncology, since it requires a high degree of both scientific understanding for example, these specialists have to pass board exams in physics and radiation biology, and emotional understanding. “Patients with cancer have just had their lives upended,” says Dr. Talcott. “Being able to help them navigate that and know they are not in it alone is incredibly meaningful.”
While attending NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Dr. Talcott decided to pursue a dual degree program that combined medicine with a master's in business administration (MBA).
Dr. Talcott brings that lens to patient care as well. Understanding that no two patients are the same, he focuses on each patient’s goals and values to get a holistic picture of individuals and their families. With that in mind, he centers his care on improving quality of life and developing the most optimal plan possible for every patient and their family. He adds that his most important skill is listening, so patients can feel heard.
Also helpful for patient outcomes, he says, are the extensive resources at Northwell Health and the high degree of collaboration among specialists and other health care professionals. Having a large team that includes nutritionists, social workers, psychologists,a nd rehabilitation therapists gives patients the benefit of deep expertise.
