Chen Wei received a PhD degree in Food Science at Jiangnan University in 2003. He joined the faculty at Jiangnan University as a professor and PhD supervisor in 2006. Prior to being the Vice President of Jiangnan University in April 2017, he served as the Vice Dean of the School of Food Science, Deputy Director of the Science & Technology Office, Deputy Director of the Graduate Office, Director of the Discipline Construction Office, Director of the Development & Planning Office and Dean of the School of Food Science and National Engineering Research Center of Functional Food. In May 2020, Chen Wei was appointed as President of Jiangnan University. Chen Wei has gained nationwide recognition for his active and long-term engagement in the research and teaching in the field of Food Microbiology. He was awarded Labor Day Medal and honoured with National Outstanding Technologist, National Advanced Worker and Cheung Kong Scholar. He is one of the national candidates for the New Century Talents Project and enjoys the Special Allowance of the State Council. He was also chosen as the head of the innovation team of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program by the Ministry of Education and head of the innovation team in the key scientific and technological field approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. He has won the second prize of the National Technological Progress Award, the first prize of National Teaching Achievements Award and the first prize of the Jiangsu Technological Progress Award. In 2019, Chen Wei was elected the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Chen Wei now holds several concurrent posts in academic societies, such as the standing council member of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology and the Chairman of the Probiotics Branch, and the Vice Chairman of the Nutrition and Health Food Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society.
