Warren Ston SandbergBS, MD, PhD
Dr. Warren Sandberg’s research program focuses on engineering clinical workflows and developing clinical informatics tools to improve clinical and process effectiveness in perioperative environments. Through the application of process improvement techniques, modeling techniques from operations research, automated electronic decision support, and statistical process control methodologies, Dr. Sandberg’s research group studies the perioperative patient care environment as a system whose reliability and effectiveness can be systematically improved.
Dr. Sandberg’s research group was the first to rigorously demonstrate in actual clinical environments that deliberate designs to facilitate parallel workflow yield reliable, statistically significant and operationally relevant increases in patient throughput. The group was the first to demonstrate that statistical process control methodologies efficiently detect changes in perioperative system performance for both operative and non-operative processes, and that individual components of a perioperative process can be modeled as queuing systems. Using perioperative clinical information systems.
