Dr. Wally R. Smith, MD, is Distinguished University Professor, Florence Neal Cooper Smith Professor of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), Director of the Adult SCD Medical Home, and Vice-Chair for Research, Division of General Internal Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He is a world authority on pain in SCD. He is Executive Editor of the Journal of Sickle Cell Disease, published by Oxford University Press.
He is the lead author of the new book “Managing Sickle Cell Pain”: part of Oxford’s “What do I do Now” series. He is the former President of the EE Just Hematology Society. He is on the boards of the Foundation for SCD Research and the National Institutes of Health Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) initiative. He is one of three Principal Investigators for the $6 million NIH-Funded Sickle Cell Disease Pain and Analgesia Integrative Network (SCDPAIN, 1U24AT012868). He has published 170 manuscripts and has been the principal investigator on 60 externally-funded grant proposals.
