Mr Wael Awad graduated from Imperial College, London, in 1988. He was interested in Cardiothoracic Surgery from an early stage and trained at the most prestigious teaching hospitals in London, including the Royal Brompton, The London Chest, Guy's, St Bartholomew's and St Thomas' Hospitals, with some of the leading and pioneering surgeons, including Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, Professor Peter Goldstraw and Mr John Wright.

He was awarded a British Heart Foundation grant to undertake research on ischaemic preconditioning in the immature myocardium and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of London in 1999. He was appointed Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Barts & the Royal London NHS Trust in 2003, where he practices Adult Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery.

Mr Awad is Lead Surgeon for the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Programme. His other specialist interests include complex coronary artery bypass surgery, stentless aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair and surgery of the thoracic aorta. In Thoracic Surgery, he specialises in surgery for lung and mediastinal tumours and in video assisted thoracoscopy.
