Dr. Vishnupriya Rao Paturi graduated from Visakhapatnam, received Post graduate qualification in MD Medicine from Stanley, Madras, and became the first Clinician to receive a Ph.D. from the Department of Endocrinology in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He has also received Fellowships from the American College of Endocrinology and the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Dr. Rao worked full-time for 7 years under Professor Ahuja at AIIMS and was closely associated with him for another 10 years in Diabetes Epidemiology studies. He was guided by the doyens of Medicine in India - Professors Sam G.P. Moses, B.B. Tripathy, and H.B. Chandalia for over 25 years. He has worked for short periods with eminent physicians and teachers of Medicine in many parts of the country and abroad in London for one year, Zagreb in Yugoslavia and Phoenix in the USA for 6 months each, and in Malaysia and Guyana for 3 months each – while researching the diabetes epidemiology under the aegis of ICMR, CSIR, NHS (UK), NIH (USA) and WHO.

He has served the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) since 1983 and increased the life membership of RSSDI from 90 to 4600 as RSSDI Secretary between 1993 and 2007.

Since 1990, he continues to be a non-practicing teaching faculty of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences University Hospital in Hyderabad pursuing teaching and research careers, simultaneously. He has published in British Medical Journal, Lancet, Diabetic Medicine, Diabetology, Diabetes Care, etc. He was the first to publish global gene expression in Asian Indians with diabetes and protein biomarkers of diabetes in human urine and saliva.

His initiatives for postgraduate CME in diabetology - CME credits, PG Courses, Postgraduate Certificate program, Accreditation in Diabetology, and WebCME, benefitted hundreds of primary care clinicians across the country.
