Virgilio P. Carnielli, MD, PhD, is Director of Neonatal Medicine at G. Salesi Hospital, the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona, Italy. His present position is Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics at the Polytechnic University of Marche. He graduated from the University of Padua School of Medicine, where he completed the internship and residence (in Paediatrics and Neonatology) at University Hospital in Padua. Virgilio Carnielli did his clinical and research fellowship at Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto Canada. He spent 4 years as Consultant Neonatologist at the Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and 2 years as Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health, University College London, London UK.

Prof. Carnielli’s primary research interests are pulmonary surfactant and metabolism in neonatology and in paediatrics. He is also involved in numerous research projects in Neonatal and Paediatric Nutrition. The main research themes are on biochemical and functional aspects of the lung and of the brain in the foetus and in new-born infants and children. Some of the investigations by Virgilio Carnielli are being conducted with the use of stable isotopes that allow the study of the kinetics of nutrients, drugs, and selected proteins even in the smallest infants and during pregnancy. Prof. Virgilio P Carnielli is a member of several professional and scientific societies.
