Viralkumar Shah MD

Dr. Viralkumar N. Shah, MD, is a professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and director of diabetes clinical research at the IU Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases at Indiana University. His research is focused on the integration of diabetes technologies for improving glycemic control and reducing complications in people with Type 1 diabetes.

Shah has been the principal investigator for many clinical trials of diabetes technologies and therapeutics. He has been a part of many landmark research projects that led to FDA approval of newer devices and changed Type 1 diabetes management.

He has served in many leadership positions, such as a steering committee member for the T1D Exchange Clinic Registry in 2016-17. He is currently serving as the chair of the Diabetes Technology Interest Group and the 83rd/84th Scientific Session Planning Committee at the American Diabetes Association. He is the recipient of the prestigious AACE Rising Star in Endocrinology Award in 2021, ADA Diabetes Technology Interest Group Award in 2022, and Diabetes Technology Society Leadership Award in 2023.

He serves as editor-in-chief for Clinical Diabetology, as senior editor for the Endocrine Connections, and on the editorial board for Diabetes Care and Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. He has over 170 research publications, including original articles, invited reviews, editorials, and book chapters.
