Victor L. Villemagne MD

Dr. Victor L. Villemagne is the Levidow-Pittsburgh Foundation Chair in Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Disorders and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry. Internationally recognized as a leading expert in Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers, Dr. Villemagne specializes in the in vivo imaging of brain pathology associated with aging and neurodegenerative disorders, with a particular focus on positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and disease-specific biomarker development.

Dr. Villemagne earned his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires School of Medicine in Argentina and completed advanced training in nuclear medicine and positron emission tomography at institutions including Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His groundbreaking research has significantly advanced the understanding of amyloid-β accumulation in Alzheimer’s disease, demonstrating that pathological brain changes can be detected by PET imaging 15–20 years before the onset of dementia symptoms.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Villemagne has authored numerous influential publications in leading medical journals, contributing to major advances in neuroimaging, biomarker discovery, and early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
