Valtyr Stefansson Thors is an Assistant Professor at the University of Iceland. Dr. Thors is an active member of the European Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases as a member of the Committee for Scientific Affairs and Awards and is furthermore the president of the Icelandic Society of Paediatrics. He is also a member of the Scientific Council at the Landspitali University Hospital and one of three members of the board managing pediatric specialty training in Iceland. He is a member of the specialist advisory group (NITAG) for childhood immunizations in Iceland.
He completed his medical degree from the University of Iceland in 2003. He entered his training in pediatrics in 2004 and completed his training in the Netherlands (2006-2011) and the UK (2011-2016). He defended his Ph.D. from the University of Bristol, the UK on the relationship between viral respiratory infections and colonizing bacteria of the nasopharynx. In addition, his other research interests are vaccine-preventable infections in particular influenza and pneumococcal infections, infections in the immunocompromised, and congenital CMV.
