Dr Valeriya Lyssenko is MD, Associate Professor, Principal Investigator in the Department of Translational Pathophysiology at Steno Diabetes Centre, Denmark and Adjunct Lector at the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University, Sweden. She has worked at Lund University at Lund Diabetes Center in Malmo with Professor Leif Groop since 2001, including two sabbatical periods in Boston at the Broad Institute. Her research focuses on understanding and identifying clinical factors and genetic factors associated with pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and disease prediction.

Presently, a major focus of Dr.Lyssenko’s research has been to identify genetic variants protecting from diabetic complications by launching a study called PROLONG (PROtective genes in diabetes complications and LONGevity) in Sweden and Denmark. In this study she has recruited type 1 diabetic patients with disease duration of more than 30 years who did not develop diabetic complications.
