Valerie Quarmby, Ph.D., is a Staff Scientist and Director of the Department of BioAnalytical Sciences at Genentech. Dr Quarmby earned a B.Sc. from the University of London, England and a Ph.D. in Hormone Physiology from the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. After completing an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship she joined the Laboratories for Reproductive Biology and the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Genentech, Dr Quarmby worked in the field of clinical diagnostics at Bio-Rad Laboratories and at Endocrine Sciences/Esoterix.
While at Genentech, Dr Quarmby has developed bioanalytical methods, strategies and insights to enable IND, BLA, sBLA, NDA and CTD filings for: Nutropin AQ, Nutropin Depot, Xolair, Raptiva, Rituxan, Avastin, Perjeta and Lucentis. She has also played a key role in creating bioanalytical methods, platforms and strategies for many of the therapeutic proteins that are currently in the Genentech/gRED drug development pipeline.
Dr Quarmby currently chairs the internal group that establishes bioanalytical strategies for all protein therapeutics in the gRED drug development pipeline, and also consults with project teams as a subject matter expert. In addition, Dr Quarmby is involved in a number of cross functional initiatives that are related to her areas of expertise, and she also leads a key group within gRED that is responsible for the development and characterization of critical assay reagents and for molecular interaction analyses.
Dr Quarmby is an active member of AAPS, and in October 2012 she became the Chair of the AAPS Therapeutic Protein Immunogenicity Focus Group (TPIFG). Dr Quarmby is also a member of the USP Expert Panel on Immunogenicity Assays. Dr Quarmby is a frequent speaker at conferences on related topics; she is also the co-author of several AAPS sponsored industry guidance documents along with numerous technical publications in peer-reviewed journals.
