Dr. Uwe-Jens Wiese received his diploma in physics in 1984 and his Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics in 1986 from Hannover University (Germany). After postdoctoral appointments at Hamburg University, the Deutsches Elektronensynchrotron (DESY), and Bern University, he completed his habilitation at the Rheinisch Westph\"alische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen in 1993. From 1994 to 1999 Uwe-Jens Wiese was an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge (USA). In 1999 he was promoted to an Associate and later to a Full Professor at MIT. In 2001 he followed a call from the University of Bern to succeed Prof. Hans Bebie. From 2004 to 2010 he was the director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Bern University. Uwe-Jens Wiese's research interests focus on the dynamics of many strongly coupled degrees of freedom, including strongly interacting quarks and gluons in particle physics as well as strongly correlated electrons in condensed matter physics. He uses analytic quantum field theory methods as well as numerical simulations using advanced algorithmic tools to gain insight into the dynamics of these fascinating physical systems.
