Tyler Loftus MD, PhD

Tyler John Loftus, MD, is an assistant professor with the UF Department of Surgery and an acute care surgeon at UF Health Shands. Graduating magna cum laude from Clemson University, Dr. Loftus received his Bachelor of Science in Health Science in 2008. Continuing his education in South Carolina, he obtained his doctorate in medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

In 2012, Dr. Loftus started his residency in general surgery at UF Health Department of Surgery and became the administrative chief resident in 2018. After completing an NIH-sponsored research fellowship in the Sepsis and Critical Illness Research Center, Dr. Loftus continues to further his education working toward a Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics through the UF College of Medicine.

Loftus's peer-reviewed publications and research presentations at national and international meetings have evolved from translational science focusing on bone marrow failure and anemia after traumatic injury to data science focusing on machine learning to augment personalized, patient-centered decision-making. Dr. Loftus is the Associate Director of Research for the University of Florida Intelligent Critical Care Center.

Additionally, Dr. Loftus is interested in medical student and resident education and technical skills development and advancing trauma care through the Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma and Advanced Trauma Operative Management curricula and as Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency and Director of the Technical Skills Training Program.
