Dr. Trudy van der Weijden received her medical degree in 1989 and made a choice for fulltime research – instead of patient care - early in her career. She certified as epidemiologist. In 1997 she defended her thesis “Implementation of the Cholesterol clinical practice guideline” for which she received the CaRe Award 1997, the dissertation award Netherlands School of Primary Care. In 2005, she was appointed as Program Leader in CAPHRI, .and in 2010 as professor in Implementation of Clinical Practice Guidelines at the department of General Practice. She is leading the CAPHRI research program called 'Implementation of evidence'. In 2009, one of her thesis candidates, Loes van Bokhoven, received the CAPRHI award, the CARE award, and the Telephorus Award 2009 (national award from Dutch College of General Practitioners for best thesis within the Dutch primary care field published in 2007-2008). In 2010 Trudy van der Weijden was awarded with a ZonMW Parel for the IMPALA project “Shared Decision Making in lifestyle counseling”.
She is visiting senior fellow at Nijmegen IQ Scientific Institute for Quality of Health Care, working with Richard Grol, the Netherlands, and at the Cardiff Department of Primary Care and Public Health, working with Glyn Elwyn, UK. She is visiting professor at Hoge School Zuyd Heerlen, working for the Platform Quality of Life with Sandra Beurskens.
She has (co-)authored over 100 international scientific papers in peer reviewed international journals, which include the highest impact medical journals such as British Medical Journal and Journal American Medical Association.
The total number of grants obtained by Prof. van der Weijden add up to more than 15 with a total sum of more than 3 million Euro.
