Toby Coates MBBS, PhD

Dr. Toby Coates was a clinician-scientist with major clinical interests in all aspects of Transplantation and research interests in transplant immunology and type-1 diabetes. Clinical renal transplantation including HLA de-sensitization, ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation, and all aspects of kidney transplantation. Since 2011. Coates has been Associate Editor (Transplantation) of Kidney International under the expert and inspiring leadership of Professor Detlef Schlondorff and is fortunate to continue this role under Professor Pierre Ronco in 2018.

Dr. Toby Coates has been the Director of Kidney and Islet Transplantation at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (Central Northern Adelaide Renal and Transplantation Service) since 2015. The service performed the first successful kidney transplant in 1965 and has since then performed over 2500 kidney transplants. I'm proud to be a part of this excellent service that provides excellent clinical care of people with kidney failure from diagnosis, through treatment with dialysis and then transplantation. Toby's experimental interest in Islet Transplantation began in 2005 and progressed to clinical islet transplantation in 2006. We are fortunate to be in the Australian Islet Consortium since that time and progressed our clinical research into Nationally Funded Centre status in 2013. The islet transplant work was supported very generously by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - a wonderful grassroots patient organization supporting efforts to find a cure for type-1 diabetes and make a difference in the lives of those with this dreadful disease.
