Dr. Maughon is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and a product of Lakeside High School. He then attended the University of Georgia on a baseball scholarship where he lettered 4 years as a pitcher. Upon graduation, Dr. Maughon attended the Medical College of Georgia and obtained his medical degree and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. After graduation, he completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

After residency, he was chosen for a highly regarded sports medicine fellowship with world-renowned sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James R. Andrews. Since returning to Atlanta, Dr. Maughon started The Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Institute of Gwinnett. He started and organized sports medicine coverage for Gwinnett County and North Atlanta high schools and community parks as well as serving as chairman of Gwinnett Medical Center’s sports medicine committee from its inception in 1992 until 2005.
