Dr. Michael Timothy Smith is the director of the division of anatomic pathology in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He is a professor in the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Urological Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Smith completed his undergraduate degree and medical degree at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. He did his internship in pathology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center and his residency in anatomic pathology and neuropathology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, Texas. During a 21 year career in the USAF, Dr. Smith was assigned to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and chaired the Department of Pathology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. Afterward, he completed a fellowship in dermatopathology at the Medical University of South Carolina where he subsequently joined the faculty.

Dr. Smith’s academic and research interests include urological pathology, surgical pathology, neuropathology, and bone and soft tissue neoplasia. He is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology, neuropathology, and dermatopathology and is also a member of multiple societies such as the International Academy of Pathology, American Association of Neuropathologists, Arthur Purdy Stout Society, International Society of Neuropathologists, and the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology where he has served as the secretary-treasurer since 1998.
