Dr. Tiffany Riehle-Colarusso, MD, MSE is a Medical Officer in the Birth Defects Branch of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. After her training in pediatric cardiology at Emory, she joined CDC in 2005 to work on various projects related to congenital heart defects, including a new classification system for the surveillance of heart defects and for use in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. She has also been involved in studying risk factors for heart defects including maternal conditions such as treatment with opioid analgesics, diabetes, obesity, fever, rubella, and exposure to ambient air pollution. Other work includes a descriptive study of atrioventricular septal defects, updated prevalence estimates, and associated non-cardiac anomalies. She also was part of a pilot study for prenatal screening of heart defects in Southeastern China. While collaborating with external partners, she was a significant contributor to the development of the Congenital Heart Public Health Consortium, a national organization dedicated to public health aspects of heart defects. Recently, Dr. Colarusso became a subject matter expert for the Birth Defects domain of the Public health Functional Profile being developed by the Public Health Data Standards Consortium. She has done numerous presentations and her publications include: Improving the quality of surveillance data on congenital heart defects in the metropolitan Atlanta congenital defects program.
