Tiffany Lucas was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in the suburbs of DC in Maryland. She headed to Rice University in Houston, TX followed by medical school at Baylor College of Medicine where her interest in global health, medical education, and caring for those with chronic conditions and life-threatening conditions was born. She went back to the East Coast for my training in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. After that, she spent a year in Saipan - the main island of a US commonwealth territory in the Pacific (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands) as a general pediatrician. She then found her way to the Bay Area by coming to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) for training in pediatric hematology/oncology starting in 2013.
During her training at UCSF, she focused her scholarly work on medical education in bleeding disorders -- continuing the work she started while working as a pediatrician in the Northern Mariana Islands. She was subsequently fortunate enough to receive the Hemostasis Thrombosis Research Society's Clinical Fellowship award to sponsor her first year as a faculty member at UCSF where she became a local expert in bleeding and clotting while continuing to care for patients with cancer. She continued her medical education work and became the fellowship program director at UCSF during my tenure there - as well as being awarded the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology's (ASPHO) Clinician Educator Award. She continues to participate on national committees thru ASPHO and the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in areas She is passionate about -- such as training the next generation, DEI in the workforce and equity in patient care, and medical education scholarship.
Despite all of the above, what she most enjoyed and invigorated me was participating in the care of patients -- taking the time to listen and work to achieve their shared desired outcome as part of a team. Kaiser Oakland gave me that opportunity and she was excited to join in 2022 after being a faculty member at UCSF for more than 5 years. At Kaiser Permanente, she found that they have an excellent team of doctors, nurses, care managers, and staff devoted to optimizing the health of your child.
