Dr. Allan Wolkoff, the Division of GI/Liver Diseases has experienced enormous growth since the merging of the GI and Liver divisions in 2010. With the addition of many successful innovative clinical programs, research initiatives, and multi-departmental collaborations at Montefiore and Einstein, the GI and Liver operations have grown so large that each now requires its own leader.

Tom Ullman, MD To that end, the Department of Medicine has named Thomas Ullman, MD, Chief, Division of Gastroenterology, beginning in March 2018. Dr. Wolkoff will continue as Chief, Division of Hepatology and Director of the Marion Basin Liver Research Center. Dr. Ullman is currently Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Professor of Medicine in the Dr. Henry D. Janowitz Division of Gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He also serves as Chief Medical Officer in the Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice.

An internationally renowned expert in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Dr. Ullman has focused his research at Mount Sinai on the relationship between IBD and colorectal cancer and has led national efforts to improve quality of care in IBD including establishing accepted quality metrics for the process and outcome of IBD care and exploring factors associated with hospital readmission in IBD. He has conducted numerous studies detailing the natural history of dysplasia in ulcerative colitis, the influence of inflammation on carcinogenesis in IBD, and the relative chemo preventive effects of a number of therapies used to treat ulcerative colitis (UC).
